A flail is two pieces of wood, no thinner than a broom handle and no thicker than your wrist, tied together with a strap of leather or fastened with a metal hinge. The longer piece, measuring 4 to 5 feet, is held in the hands and swung over the shoulder to bring the smaller piece, measuring 3 feet, down on the straw you wish to flail.
